Your thumb is down or it is up. Everything the game asks of you comes out of when you change that, and how high you are when you do.

What the thumb does

Press

A jump. The whole game’s first law is one input, one immediate visible result, every time — so a tap a frame after the lip still fires. That grace costs the reference policy nothing measurable, which is exactly right: it is for a human thumb, not a change to the game.

Hold

The kite opens overhead and carries you. Gravity halves, forward push arrives, and your descent caps — a long, floaty line across the valley you were about to land in.

Release

On the ground, nothing. In the air below the gate, nothing. Above it, the kite swings a full revolution overhead and the run has a trick in it.

The trick has one number in front of it and the number is the design. Let the line go below 240px of height and nothing happens. Above it, the kite loops.

Measured across four skill tiers, the median apex of a run sits between 187 and 250px and the upper quartile between 231 and 386. So the gate sits above every tier’s median and below a good run’s upper quartile: you have to be having a good flight to try it, and no policy trips it by accident.

At 240 every degenerate strategy banks exactly zero loops — never hold, always hold, mash, and the reference policy alike. A player going for it banks fourteen a run.

The kite moves nothing

The kite is scenery with a job. It rides on its line, opens when you hold, swings when you let go — and it never once pushes the runner. That is a claim a game can make and quietly break, so this one measures it.

A harness records the input stream from a live run, replays that exact same stream with the trick suppressed, and compares the runner’s whole trajectory frame by frame. Twelve runs, a hundred and seventy loops, and the largest divergence found:

Re-running the policy instead of replaying the stream would not be an invariance test at all — the policy branches on whether a loop is live, so suppressing the trick changes the inputs and the runs diverge for a reason that has nothing to do with force.

The landing is the skill

Every touchdown is graded on one number: how well your velocity matched the slope you came down on. Match it and you keep your speed and gain a little. Fight it and you pay. Fly straight into a hillside and the run is over.

That grade is the score’s only multiplier. There is no streak carried between flights, no hidden chain, no number surviving a death — the game had one of those once and it was cut, because a hidden accumulator is the thing that killed the first build.
